To get more gym members in 2026, build an ecosystem rather than a funnel. Win on Google and AI search with detailed reviews, make it simple to become a lead, sell a paid front-end offer with no long-term contract, and deliver exactly what you promise. The fastest-growing gyms aren't relying on gimmicky ads.

Jenz Robinson has coached 500+ gym owners through this shift, and the video below is his breakdown of what the fastest-growing gyms are doing right now.

Why the old gym funnel stopped working

The funnel used to be simple. Run an ad, capture a lead, push them through. That's changed, for two reasons.

First, search has changed. Google and AI tools now summarise what members say about you before anyone clicks. Second, buyers have changed. They've tried big-box gyms. They've been burnt by contracts. They know they want something different, and they shop around.

Many owners fear the shopper. You should welcome them. They care. They just won't sign a 12-month contract with a gym they haven't tried.

How do Google reviews and AI search bring in gym members?

Your Google profile is now the top of your funnel. Reviews feed the AI summary that appears when someone searches for gyms near them. If your reviews describe your ideal members and their results, the summary tells searchers exactly who your gym is for, before they ever see an ad.

When Jenz moved back to South Africa, he searched for gyms in his new area. Most had weak Google profiles: few reviews, vague descriptions, nothing that said who they served. If you're losing at that first search, you've lost before the race starts.

Then check the next step. How easy is it to become a lead? A long form, jargon, or a landing page full of fluff will lose people who were ready to try you.

What is a front-end offer, and why does it beat a free trial?

A front-end offer is a paid, short entry product with no long-term commitment. It lets new people put skin in the game, experience your coaching and community, and get an early result. Free trials attract people with no commitment. A paid offer filters for serious buyers and can fund your marketing.

The price has to make sense. High enough for commitment, low enough that it doesn't push everyone away. The maths we use is simple: front-end sales should cover your ad spend.

Say you spend £2,000 a month on Meta ads and sell 10 to 15 front-end offers. At that volume, the offer should bring in at least £2,000. Do that, and you're being paid to grow your gym. Meanwhile, the gym down the road runs a 14-day free pass and wonders why they're broke.

What is a new gym member worth?

Members who come through a strong front-end offer typically stay 9 to 18 months, depending on your product. At an average of £200 a month, that's £1,800 to £3,600 per member. That's why getting the offer and the product right matters more than cheap leads.

Across the GON network, the average member lifespan is 18+ months. The industry standard is around nine. Our small group PT benchmarks show where your gym sits.

Why does delivering on your promise grow a gym?

Because overpromising is the most common reason gyms go one step forward and one step back. You don't need to exceed expectations. You need to meet them. When your delivery matches your marketing, members stay, refer friends, and leave the reviews that feed your Google profile.

The gap shows up all the time. Ads promise "world-class coaching" and "individualised support". The new member gets a rushed assessment, then joins a session of 24 people where no one remembers their name or their knee replacement.

Do the opposite. If you offer an assessment, make it fit the service. If you promise individual coaching, know their name, their reason for being there, and what the next three months of programming will do for them. When members can see their future in your gym, they stay.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest way to get more gym members?

Sell a paid front-end offer with no long-term contract, make it easy to buy, and deliver exactly what your marketing promised. A strong Google profile with detailed reviews makes every other channel work harder.

Do free trials work for gyms?

They usually attract people with no skin in the game. A paid front-end offer converts better, filters for serious buyers, and can cover your advertising costs.

How much should a gym front-end offer cost?

Enough that buyers have skin in the game, but not so much that it pushes everyone away. The test: front-end sales should at least cover your monthly ad spend.

Do Google reviews help a gym get members?

Yes. Google now shows AI summaries of what members say about you. Reviews that describe your ideal member and their results tell searchers exactly who your gym is for.
